Gorman Foundation Grants $1.5 Million to Organizations


The John T. Gorman Foundation in Portland has awarded 79 grants totaling $1.5 million through its 2024 Direct Services Grant Program to provide food, shelter, and other essential services to Mainers in need. The foundation received a record number of applications this year, highlighting the significant need for assistance in securing essentials like food and housing. Half of the grants were awarded to organizations focusing on food insecurity and housing needs, with additional grants going towards health care, legal aid, language assistance, transportation, and other services.

Among the 2024 grantees are organizations such as Catholic Charities Maine, Community Dental, Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and Maine Medical Center, receiving grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000. Gorman Foundation aims to make Maine a more equitable place where all children and families can thrive, reflecting the founder’s belief in providing opportunities to those with fewer advantages.

The foundation’s Vice President of Programs, Jennifer Beck, emphasized the importance of supporting nonprofit organizations that are filling unmet needs in communities. These grants will help strengthen the efforts of these organizations to provide essential services to Mainers in need. The John T.
