University of Maine Announces Expansion of Alfond Sports Complex- The Maine Campus

The University of Maine Athletics has announced a $320 million renovation project funded by the Harold Alfond Foundation, with $170 million dedicated to UMaine Athletics. This is one of the largest contributions ever made to a college sports program. The renovations include upgrades to the Alfond Arena entrance and facilities, new locker rooms, a film room, new concourse entrance, a Hockey Hall of Fame, and upgraded offices and training facilities. The Shawn Walsh Hockey Center will also see improvements to sports medicine, strength and conditioning spaces, and nutrition areas. The Dexter Lounge will be revamped for events and gatherings. These enhancements aim to provide championship-caliber resources for the hockey programs and strengthen gender equity in athletics. The project is part of a larger initiative to enhance athletic facilities at UMaine, with future upgrades to include new soccer and track and field complexes, a new Mahaney Dome, an indoor connector to Memorial Gym, and the construction of Morse Arena. The project is being managed by WBRC, Crawford Architects, PC Construction, and Forty Nine Degrees, with a completion date set for Fall 2024. This renovation marks the beginning of a transformation for UMaine Athletics.
