Governor Mills to nominate new head of Maine DHHS

Maine native Sara Gagné-Holmes is set to become the next commissioner of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, as announced by Gov. Janet Mills. Gagné-Holmes, who has been serving as the deputy commissioner for the past five years, will replace Jeanne Lambrew who left in May. Mills praised Gagné-Holmes’ dedication to improving the lives of Maine people and her extensive experience within the department.

The Department of Health and Human Services oversees a wide range of services including health, child and family welfare, and disease control. The department has faced criticism in recent years, particularly regarding the Office of Child and Family Services following the deaths of young children who had received services.

Gagné-Holmes’ nomination is pending a hearing before the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee and confirmation by the state Senate. In response to her nomination, Gagné-Holmes expressed a commitment to continuing to improve services and build trust with the community.

With a background in law and health care, Gagné-Holmes has a wealth of experience that makes her well-suited for the role. She has previously worked in both legal services and advocacy, as well as philanthropy. Gagné-Holmes is excited to continue advancing the department’s mission of ensuring health, safety, resilience, and opportunity for the people of Maine.
