Maine Football alumni shining in the NFL & CFL


Seven former University of Maine Black Bears are currently making their mark in professional football organizations as of May 20, 2024. The list of current professionals includes Patrick Ricard, Zavier Scott, Andre Miller, Shawn Bowman, Justin Sambu, Deshawn Stevens, and Terrence Ganyi.

Patrick Ricard, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, leads the group with an impressive career in the NFL playing for the Baltimore Ravens. Zavier Scott, an undrafted free agent signed by the Indianapolis Colts in 2023, was a key offensive player for the Black Bears during his time at Maine. Andre Miller, who was recently signed by the Ottawa Redblacks, had a standout senior season with the Black Bears, ranking high in various statistical categories.

Shawn Bowman, a tight end, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a rookie free agent, showcasing his skills after a successful collegiate career. Terrence Ganyi was selected by the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League Draft after transferring to Maine from UConn. Deshawn Stevens, a former Black Bear standout who was drafted in the CFL’s first round, had a stellar career at Maine before transferring to West Virginia for a season.

Justin Sambu, who played for Maine and later transferred to Baylor, also made his mark in the professional football realm. The contributions of these former Black Bears in professional football highlight the success of the University of Maine football program in preparing players for the next level.
