Tracking AI Regulations in the United States: A Global Perspective on AI Governance

While there is currently no comprehensive federal legislation in the US specifically regulating AI, there are existing laws that touch on AI-related issues. Various frameworks and guidelines exist to guide the regulation of AI, such as the White House Executive Order on AI and the AI Bill of Rights. Additionally, several leading AI companies have voluntarily committed to safe and transparent development of AI technology.

There are also several federal proposed laws related to AI, including the SAFE Innovation AI Framework and the AI Research Innovation and Accountability Act. State legislatures have introduced bills aimed at regulating AI, with Colorado enacting the comprehensive Colorado AI Act.

Existing laws affecting AI include privacy and intellectual property laws that are generally applicable to AI technologies. State legislation, such as the California Privacy Protection Act and the Biometric Information Privacy Act in Illinois, regulate AI-related issues. Additionally, executive orders have been issued in some states regarding AI.

The definition of AI varies, with the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative and White House Executive Order defining it as a machine-based system that can make predictions or decisions. State privacy bills have different definitions of automated decision-making technology or profiling, emphasizing the need for clarity in the regulatory landscape surrounding AI.
