Surprising facts about loons that will shock you

The annual Maine Loon Count mobilized over 1,600 volunteers in 2023 to survey loons in southern and central Maine. Despite facing threats such as flooding, predation, and territorial battles, the loon population in Maine has been on the rise, with roughly 3,000 loons documented across southern Maine in 2022. While adult loons are doing better, baby production remains flat, indicating a need for better protection of chicks.

Loons are territorial and will defend their nesting areas, sometimes resulting in aggressive battles, particularly among males. Loons communicate through vocalizations such as yodels, wails, tremolos, and hoots, with each serving a specific purpose.

Despite the challenges they face, loons can live up to 20 years and do not migrate south for the winter like other species. Instead, they head to saltwater areas before returning to freshwater for the breeding season. Loon nesting success rates are low, with a pair successfully raising a chick only once every two years.

Overall, efforts to protect Maine’s loon population have been successful in increasing the adult population, but more needs to be done to ensure the survival of chicks. With threats from flooding, predation, and territorial battles, it is vital to continue monitoring and protecting these iconic birds in Maine.
