The Maine potato industry pays tribute to retiring director and Susan Collins

The Maine Potato Board honored retiring Executive Director Don Flannery for his 27 years of service during the annual industry dinner in Easton. Flannery received the 2024 Maine Potato Industry Recognition Award and will retire in October, with Assistant Executive Director Jeannie Tapley set to take his place. The event, attended by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, acknowledged Flannery’s contributions to the potato industry and advancements made during his tenure.

Flannery highlighted the technological advancements in farming over the past 27 years, emphasizing the importance of good soil management and storage systems in producing high-quality crops. He credited Dr. Greg Porter and the University of Maine for creating disease-resistant potatoes like the Caribou russet, which have had a significant impact on the industry.

Senator Collins praised Flannery’s advocacy for the potato industry, emphasizing the importance of funding for potato breeding programs and agricultural research. Her unwavering support for the industry was recognized with a golden “Mr. Potato Head” trophy at the dinner.

Flannery expressed confidence in Tapley’s leadership, citing her experience and rapport with growers as she prepares to take over as Executive Director. The dinner, a tradition during the Maine Potato Blossom Festival, concluded with thanks to the hosts and organizers for their contributions to the successful event.
