Four House Democrats have joined the growing chorus of voices calling on President Joe Biden to step aside from his re-election bid. In a letter addressed to the president, the congressmen emphasized the need for a younger leader and suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris should be at the top of the ticket. The lawmakers praised Biden’s decades of service but urged him to prioritize the country and values by stepping aside. This comes after Senator Jon Tester and Senator Martin Heinrich publicly urged Biden to reconsider his candidacy.
Despite the mounting pressure on Biden to step aside, he has received support from some progressives, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who warned that removing Biden could lead to chaos, including an attempt to remove Vice President Harris from the ticket. The discord within the Democratic Party over Biden’s candidacy highlights the tensions between different factions within the party.
The Biden campaign received an endorsement from Bold Pac, the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, citing the disastrous consequences of a second Trump presidency for the Latino community. However, Biden’s response to Russia sentencing a Wall Street Journal reporter to 16 years in prison for espionage received criticism as he denounced the decision and reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom. Amidst the calls for Biden to step aside, the president’s future at the top of the 2024 Democratic ticket remains uncertain.
