Lewiston High School boys’ soccer team clinched the Class A state championship with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Deering on November 11, 2023. The win came as a source of joy and healing for the community still reeling from a mass shooting that occurred on October 25. Tegra Mbele’s dramatic goal in overtime secured the victory and kickstarted a joyous celebration for the team and fans. Mbele also scored the first goal of the game and expressed his happiness at scoring in a final like this. Lewiston goalie Payson Goyette made crucial saves to maintain the lead, while Mohamed Gabow and Chandral Mangele-Laza also scored for Lewiston. Deering fought back and equalized twice during the game but ultimately fell short. Despite the loss, Deering’s Ethan Fisher reflected on the positive experience of playing high school soccer and the joy of competing with friends from other schools. Lewiston’s coach Dan Gish marveled at the euphoric scene after Mbele’s winning goal and praised his team’s effort throughout the season. This victory marked Lewiston’s fourth championship since 2015 and was dedicated to bringing joy and positivity to the city. The game has been recognized as the 2023-24 Varsity Maine Boys’ Game of the Year.
