Albin Boija, the Swedish goalie for the University of Maine men’s hockey team, had an unexpected rise to success last season. Originally brought in to back up goalie Victor Ostman, Boija quickly claimed the starting position and played a key role in the team’s successful season. With an impressive 2.01 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage, Boija was recognized as a top goalie in the country. He was also named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week multiple times.
Boija’s journey continued this summer as he attended the Detroit Red Wings’ development camp, where he showcased his skills and received praise from teammates. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Boija is determined to continue improving and helping the Black Bears reach new heights in Division I hockey.
Despite a disappointing end to last season due to illness, Boija remains focused on his growth and development as a player. Coach Ben Barr and teammates have high expectations for him, noting his maturity, work ethic, and skill level. Boija, who will turn 21 in August, is committed to enhancing all aspects of his game, including his skating, to become one of the best goalies in the league.
