US Vice-President Kamala Harris kicked off her White House campaign with a fiery speech in Wisconsin, painting the election as a choice between a former prosecutor and a convicted felon, referring to former President Donald Trump. With the support of the majority of Democratic delegates, Harris has quickly gained momentum, raising a staggering $100 million within 36 hours of President Joe Biden’s endorsement.
In her speech, Harris highlighted her experience as California’s attorney general and vowed to put her record against Trump’s any day of the week. Despite being labeled as the most unpopular vice-president in US history by Trump, Harris outlined liberal priorities such as gun control, abortion access, child poverty, union rights, and affordable healthcare.
However, the Trump campaign is already attacking Harris on issues such as illegal immigration at the US-Mexico border, crime, and inflation. Trump has accused her of bailing out violent offenders, insulting Israel, and deceiving the public about Biden’s “cognitive decline.” He also expressed willingness to debate her in September.
Democratic lawmakers, Hollywood stars, and top donors have already endorsed Harris, potentially unlocking further substantial donations for her campaign. As President Biden prepares to explain his decision to withdraw from the race, a Republican member of the House of Representatives has introduced articles of impeachment against Harris over her handling of immigration at the border, although it is considered unlikely to advance. The future of the Harris campaign remains uncertain as she faces attacks from the Trump campaign and prepares to solidify her position as the Democratic nominee.
