Maine’s political leaders are calling for changes within the Department of Defense following the release of the U.S. Army Reserve’s investigation into the Lewiston shooter. Senators Angus King and Susan Collins emphasized the need for improved coordination and communication within the Department of Defense to prevent future tragedies. Collins pointed out gaps in following up with soldiers with mental illness, while also highlighting the need to trigger Maine’s Yellow Flag law for the removal of personal weapons.
Collins and King plan to work on legislation directing the military to utilize state crisis intervention programs to prevent future incidents. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree supported these efforts and called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban, enact universal background checks, require safe gun storage, and end immunity for gun manufacturers to prevent gun violence.
Governor Janet Mills expressed the importance of understanding the causes of the tragedy and looks forward to reviewing the reports. The Independent Commission’s report is also awaited. Overall, Maine’s leaders are calling for swift action and systemic changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
