World Cup skier Jean Daniel Pession and his girlfriend, Elisa Arlian, tragically died following a fall of nearly 2,300 feet while mountain climbing in the Italian Alps. The couple fell from a spot near the summit of Monte Zerbion in Aosta Valley, despite being familiar with the climbing route and wearing a safety rope. The reason for their fall is still unclear. Rescuers found their bodies still attached by the safety rope after an hours-long search. Pession was a skilled skier who placed 15th in the final World Cup standings for speed skiing in 2021, while Arlian was a teacher and ski instructor. The Italian Winter Sports Federation expressed condolences for the couple’s “tragic misfortune.” The couple’s families reported them missing after they did not return from their climb, leading to the discovery of their bodies using equipment that detects cellphone signals. Pession and Arlian were alone during their climb, and the incident has left the climbing community in shock.
