Tanzanian universities are striving for global recognition but are falling behind their East African counterparts in rankings. The University of Dar es Salaam holds the 37th position in Africa, with Sokoine University of Agriculture and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences following behind. The University of Dodoma and State University of Zanzibar are positioned lower nationally. In comparison, universities in Kenya and Uganda rank higher in the continent.
Experts emphasize the importance of global visibility for academic advancement, suggesting Tanzanian universities benchmark against international standards. Utilizing digital platforms and online resources, expanding social media engagement, and forming strategic collaborations with international institutions are recommended. English proficiency among faculty and students is essential for effective communication and scholarly engagement on the global stage. Diversifying academic programs and promoting interdisciplinary approaches are also encouraged to tackle global challenges.
Efforts are being made by Tanzanian universities such as UDSM, SUA, MUHAS, and UDOM to enhance their global standing through initiatives like partnerships and infrastructure investments. However, caution is advised regarding ranking processes, with an emphasis on accurate information dissemination. UniRank’s criteria for rankings include official recognition, accreditation, and offering traditional face-to-face learning formats through on-site facilities. Community colleges, vocational colleges, and distance learning institutions are not currently included in the rankings.
