Bowdoin College student and Team Haiti swimmer, Jay Halpern, will be the third member of his family to compete in the Olympics. Halpern’s grandfather, Irwin Halpern, was a weightlifter who competed in the 1948 London Olympics, and his father, David Halpern, was a swimmer who competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Halpern, a junior at Bowdoin College, has been training tirelessly to represent Haiti in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. Born in the United States, Halpern’s mother is Haitian, which allows him to compete for the country. He has dual citizenship, which makes him eligible to compete for both the United States and Haiti.
Competing for Haiti holds special significance for Halpern, as he is proud to represent his mother’s heritage on the global stage. He will be competing in the 50-meter freestyle event, where he hopes to make a strong showing and make his family and country proud.
Bowdoin College has been supportive of Halpern’s Olympic dreams, allowing him to balance his rigorous training schedule with his academic responsibilities. His coaches and teammates at Bowdoin have been rallying behind him, cheering him on as he prepares for the biggest competition of his life.
As the Olympics draw near, Halpern remains focused and determined to give his all in representing Haiti. With his family legacy of Olympic competition behind him, he is poised to make his mark in Tokyo and continue the proud tradition of his family’s Olympic achievements. Bowdoin College is proud to have such a dedicated and talented athlete as part of their community.
