Black Bears Lose to Big Red in NCAA Tournament

In a thrilling first round of the NCAA Tournament, the #6 University of Maine men’s hockey team fell to #12 Cornell with a final score of 3-1 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The Black Bears, who had a 23-12-2 season record, took an early lead with Harrison Scott scoring the opening goal six minutes into the game. However, Cornell managed to equalize before adding two more goals in the second and third periods to secure the win.

Despite Maine having a 32-18 lead in shots on goal, they were unable to convert on the power play opportunities. Goalie Victor Ostman made 15 saves but ultimately couldn’t prevent the loss. The result saw Maine’s all-time series record with Cornell at 7-8-3, with this being their first-ever meeting in the NCAA Tournament. The Black Bears, now 30-21 in NCAA Tournament history, had their most successful season since 2011-12 with 23 wins and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in almost a decade.

Both teams demonstrated strong performances, but it was Cornell who emerged victorious and advanced to the next round of the tournament. Maine’s season may have come to an end, but they had a commendable campaign and will look to build on their successes for the next season. With record-breaking achievements and a solid presence in the NCAA Tournament, the Black Bears have shown immense potential and determination on the ice.
