Conservative backlash over Olympic opening ceremony drag performance inspired by Last Supper

The extravagant opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics has sparked controversy and fury, especially among the populist and religious right in the United States. The ceremony featured a scene resembling a modern interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, with drag performers and queer figures, drawing criticism from conservative and Christian groups.

While some fans appreciated the display of French camp and kitsch, critics like former Donald Trump campaign attorney Jenna Ellis, called the ceremony containing “overt pagan and satanic symbolism.” Others, including Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker and Bishop Emmanuel Gobillard, expressed being deeply hurt and mocked the religious portrayal.

Artistic director Thomas Jolly defended the production, emphasizing the message of inclusion and diversity. Despite controversy, figures like Far-right French politician Marion Marechal-Le Pen and Elon Musk took to social media to criticize the event’s perceived “wokeness.”

Debates were ignited on social media, with differing opinions on the depiction of religious scenes in public events. Some pointed out the long history of the Last Supper being parodied, while others like Bishop Robert Barron questioned whether similar treatment would be given to Islamic symbols.

The clash of religious sensitivities and artistic freedom is not new to France, known for its secularism and freedom of expression. While some view the ceremony as a celebration of diversity, others find it offensive and disrespectful, leading to heated discussions online and in the media.
