Two children were tragically killed in a stabbing attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event in Southport, with nine others injured, six of them critically. The attack left two adults in critical condition as well. A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident.
Chief constable Serena Kennedy described the attack as “ferocious” and stated that Counter-Terrorism Police North-West were offering support, although the incident is not believed to be terrorist-related. The motivation behind the attack remains unclear.
Police have cordoned off a street in the village of Banks, where officers are stationed outside a house. Local witnesses reported encountering the suspect shortly before the attack, with one stating that he was aggressive and confrontational.
Merseyside’s police and crime commissioner expressed shock and devastation at the incident, offering condolences to the victims and their families. The Prime Minister and leader of the opposition also extended sympathies to those affected and praised the emergency services for their response.
