November ballot order of ballot questions announced

Maine Voters to Decide on Five Ballot Questions in November

The Secretary of State’s office in Maine has determined the order of five ballot questions that will go before voters in November through a public lottery.

The first question, proposed by campaign finance reform activists led by Lawrence Lessig, asks voters if they want to set a $5,000 limit for contributions to political action committees (PACs). This measure aims to limit the influence of PACs, which can spend large amounts of money independently of candidates. If approved, this proposal is likely to face legal challenges and may even reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

Questions 2-4 involve bonds for specific state investments, including $25 million for research and development, $10 million for restoring historical buildings, and $30 million for trails statewide. These investments would support various sectors and infrastructure projects in the state.

The fifth question asks voters if they favor making the former state flag, known as the Pine Tree Flag, the official flag of Maine. This question is drawing attention as lawmakers last year approved legislation for a new flag design based on the original state flag used in the early 1900s. The Secretary of State’s office received over 400 submissions in a design contest, with a decision expected in August.

Maine residents will have the opportunity to weigh in on these important issues in the upcoming November election. Stay tuned for more updates as the campaign season progresses.
