A 16-year-old teen who escaped from Maine’s only youth prison was arrested in Massachusetts after crashing a stolen Porsche. The teen, along with another suspect, had stolen a white Honda Civic during the escape. The second suspect, identified as 18-year-old Davyn Flynn, remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone who sees Flynn to call 911 and not approach him.
The escape has raised concerns about staffing shortages and lack of services at Long Creek Youth Development Center. The facility has faced ongoing turmoil, including lockdown periods and concerns about security. The Maine Service Employees Association has expressed worries about staff being understaffed, underpaid, and overworked.
The South Portland Police Department is now investigating the armed robbery that occurred during the escape. The Department of Corrections is leading the search for the escapees, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. Little information has been released about how the teens escaped and their whereabouts since Friday night.
Sharon Craig, an attorney representing one of the teens, expressed concerns about potential lockdowns and tighter security measures in response to the escape. The incident highlights the challenges faced by staff and residents at Long Creek. The union representing the facility’s educational staff and supervisors has also raised concerns about the overall conditions at the youth prison. Police are continuing to work with law enforcement in Massachusetts and New Hampshire to locate the second escapee.
