Crowds at Paris Olympics struggle with rising temperatures after rain dampens start of Games

The 2024 Olympics in Paris are facing a new challenge after a rain-soaked opening ceremony last week: a heat wave. With temperatures in Paris and its surrounding areas expected to climb to 35 C or higher, visitors and residents are finding ways to stay cool. Water stations and mist stations have been set up at venues like La Concorde urban park, where skateboarding and BMX freestyle cycling events are taking place. Paris’ train and metro operator is distributing over 2.5 million containers of water at various stations and stops to help people stay hydrated. The heat wave is even more severe in the south of France, around Marseille, where soccer and sailing events are being held. The French national weather agency has warned that heat waves are becoming more intense, frequent, and long-lasting due to climate change. They used to occur once every five years before 1989, but now happen every year since 2000, with the trend expected to continue increasing. Olympic fans and participants are advised to stay hydrated, seek shade, and take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses during the scorching temperatures.
