Review: Olympic athletes embrace innovative eco-friendly cardboard beds

Athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics have raised concerns about the comfort of the eco-friendly cardboard beds in the Olympic Village. While the intention was to boost the Games’ green credentials by using fully recyclable bed frames and mattresses, some athletes have complained about the discomfort of the beds. Athletes have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with one lamenting, “My back is about to fall off” in a TikTok video.

Despite the efforts to make the Olympic Village environmentally friendly, some teams have taken matters into their own hands by upgrading their beds or even opting to stay off-site. The US team, for example, has employed additional pillows and mattress toppers, as well as a cooling solution to make sleeping more comfortable.

These concerns about the comfort of the Olympic Village beds have raised questions about whether the green initiatives at the Games are counterproductive. Despite the efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainability, the priority for athletes competing in the Olympics is to ensure a good night’s sleep and optimal performance.

As some teams have chosen to stay off-site and invest in more comfortable accommodations, the effectiveness of the eco-friendly Olympic Village beds is being called into question. While the intention was commendable, the practicality and comfort of the cardboard beds have become a point of contention among athletes participating in Paris 2024.
