Merseyside Police have urged an end to speculation surrounding the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect in relation to Monday’s fatal attack on a children’s dance class. The violence has led to clashes between far-right, anti-Muslim protesters and police in Southport, resulting in 22 officers being injured, eight seriously. The unrest, believed to be linked to the English Defence League, began when protesters targeted a local mosque, setting vehicles on fire and attacking a shop.
The violence broke out shortly after a vigil was held in memory of the victims of the knife attack, in which three young girls were killed and eight children were injured. Two adults who tried to protect them remain in critical condition. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promised to use the full force of the law against the rioters, stating that they have insulted the community as it grieves.
A teenager has been arrested for murder and attempted murder in connection with the stabbings, and police have emphasized the need to avoid speculation and rumors about the suspect. Many of the individuals involved in the violence were said to be from outside the area, and there are concerns that the incident is being used to spread hatred.
The Liverpool Region Mosque Network has expressed distress over the protests outside Southport Mosque, causing fear and anxiety within the community. The three girls who tragically lost their lives have been identified, with singer Taylor Swift expressing shock over the loss of life and innocence. The police are urging calm and are working to restore peace in the area.
