United Auto Workers Backs Harris, Boosting her Support in Industrial States

The United Auto Workers (UAW) has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in the upcoming election in November. UAW President Shawn Fain stated that the union’s main goal is to defeat Republican Donald Trump, emphasizing Harris’ commitment to standing with workers against corporate greed. This endorsement came after President Biden dropped out of the race, leading to the UAW’s decision to support Harris, who had already been endorsed by the AFL-CIO.

Fain has been vocal in his criticism of Trump, referring to him as a “scab” and accusing him of not supporting workers when General Motors closed a factory in 2019. The UAW previously endorsed Biden’s reelection bid and has a history of supporting Democratic candidates. Despite this, a significant number of union members also back the GOP, as evidenced by AP VoteCast data showing that 42% of union members and households supported Trump in the 2020 election.

Trump has made efforts to appeal to union members, promising to protect the auto industry and criticizing Fain for alleged failures related to Chinese automakers. However, industry analysts have debunked these claims, highlighting the strength of the auto industry and job growth under Biden’s administration. Additionally, the Teamsters union, with 1.3 million members, has not yet made an endorsement in the presidential race.

Overall, the UAW’s endorsement of Kamala Harris underscores the importance of labor support in the upcoming election, particularly in key battleground states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. This support could significantly impact the outcome of the election and shape the future of labor relations in the United States.
