United Auto Workers endorses Harris, bolstering her support in key manufacturing regions

The United Auto Workers (UAW) have officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in the upcoming November election, with the goal of defeating Republican Donald Trump. UAW President Shawn Fain stated that the union’s job is to stand against corporate greed and support a candidate who aligns with their values. The endorsement of Harris was expected after President Biden dropped out of the race earlier in the year, as he had previously received the UAW’s backing.

Fain has been vocal in his criticism of Trump, calling him a “scab” and accusing him of not supporting workers, particularly in Ohio when General Motors closed a factory. The UAW had endorsed Biden for re-election in January, following successful negotiations for raises for workers at Detroit automakers. The union’s support for Democrats aligns with the preferences of its members, although a significant portion also support the GOP.

Trump, in turn, has courted union members by claiming he would rescue the auto industry and protect American jobs. He has falsely accused Fain of allowing Chinese automakers to build factories in Mexico, a claim that industry analysts have refuted. Despite Trump’s promises, the auto industry remains strong, with Detroit companies reporting profits and increased employment.

The Teamsters union, which has not yet made an endorsement in the presidential race, also plays a significant role in representing workers. The UAW’s endorsement of Harris signals a unified front among labor unions to support a candidate who prioritizes workers’ rights and fights against corporate interests.
