Members of the UN Security Council concerned about escalation of conflict following assassination of Haniyeh in Iran | Updates on Israel-Palestine tensions

Countries of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have strongly condemned the assassination of Hamas’s political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and have called for diplomatic efforts to prevent an all-out war in the Middle East. The emergency meeting saw tensions rise as Iran and Hamas vowed revenge against Israel, which has not taken responsibility for the attack.

The meeting also addressed further violence in the region, including Israel killing Hezbollah’s military commander and attacks in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Palestine accused Israel of destabilizing the region, while Iran blamed the US and Israel for Haniyeh’s assassination. The US denied involvement and called for pressure on Iran.

Israel pushed for condemnation of Iran for supporting terrorism and for increased sanctions. Lebanon and Syria contested Israel’s claims of self-defense, with warnings of global repercussions.

China, Russia, Japan, France, and the United Kingdom called for restraint and a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the need for diplomatic negotiations for long-term peace. The meeting highlighted the grave situation in the Middle East and the urgent need for de-escalation to prevent a full-scale war that could have far-reaching consequences.
