Patriots with looming contract issues as Matt Judon returns to practice

Patriots outside linebacker Matthew Judon practiced on Thursday after a contract dispute earlier in the week. Judon left practice on Monday and later confronted team leaders on the field. Coach Jerod Mayo stated that he and Judon had a conversation and are working towards a possible extension, keeping details private. Judon had publicly refuted reports of a contract offer on social media, but Mayo emphasized the importance of internal conversations and long-term relationships.

The Patriots also signed defensive tackle Davon Godchaux to a two-year extension worth $21 million, with $16.5 million guaranteed. Godchaux expressed gratitude for the deal and mentioned his hope for Judon to receive a new contract soon. Judon’s teammate, Josh Uche, praised his production and leadership on the defense. Reports indicate that negotiations between Judon and the Patriots are still ongoing, with Judon being underpaid compared to other elite pass rushers.

In addition to Godchaux’s extension, the Patriots added depth at the defensive tackle position by signing Mike Purcell, who previously played for the Denver Broncos. This move came after news that Christian Barmore, another defensive tackle, was diagnosed with blood clots and has no timetable for return. Barmore recently signed a four-year extension worth up to $92 million, making him the highest-paid defensive player in Patriots history. Mayo expressed satisfaction with Godchaux’s extension and readiness to have him on the team long term.
