Randolph voters give green light to $1.56 million municipal budget

Residents of Randolph gathered for town meeting to vote on a proposed $1.56 million municipal budget, with the focus of discussion primarily on whether to appropriate funds for townwide trash pickup. The budget was easily passed, but residents rejected allocating money for the service due to a significant increase in cost compared to previous years.

Town officials left the decision up to residents, with Selectman Matt Drost explaining that the estimated cost for the cleanup was more than $9,000, double the amount from previous years. The town’s trash pickup service allows residents to dispose of larger items and difficult-to-throw-away items in an organized manner, with about 30 residents utilizing the service each year by paying for a permit.

Some residents suggested raising $2,500 for cleanup next year, while others questioned the need for funding to provide the service to a small number of residents. Ultimately, residents decided not to allocate any funds towards the trash pickup article and will reconsider the matter in the next fiscal year.

Minor adjustments were also made to the budget, including changing the September tax collection date to avoid conflicts at the Town Office and increasing the funds for the town’s fire hydrant contract. The overall spending plan for Randolph reflects a slight increase from the previous year’s budget, driven by inflation affecting prices and salary adjustments for town office positions to keep up with the cost of living.

The total spending plan, including the town’s share of the school district and county budgets, comes in at $2.96 million, with $866,176 expected to be raised through property taxes. The rest of the balance will be offset by other sources to lessen the impact on Randolph property owners.
