MECHANIC FALLS — In a tragic turn of events, two young sisters, Harmony Mae West, 11, and Hope Marie West, 6, were found dead at their family’s apartment in Mechanic Falls, Maine. Chief Jeffrey Goss of the Mechanic Falls Police Department confirmed that the sisters died by homicide. Their mother, Jennifer Barney, 37, was also found deceased, with her death ruled a suicide. The bodies were discovered during a welfare check by local police, who then requested assistance from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South. Detectives and evidence response technicians processed the scene and the bodies were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies.
The community has been devastated by the loss of the two young girls, who were described as quiet and sweet by neighbors. A GoFundMe page has been set up by the girls’ great-uncle to help cover funeral expenses. The girls’ father, James Lee West, had passed away in 2019, leaving behind the family. The community has rallied together to offer support and condolences to the grieving family.
The girls attended Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls and had not been seen at summer school recently, according to reports. Neighbors recalled that the family kept to themselves, and the girls’ mother worked as an inbound sales representative and also drove for DoorDash. The tragedy has left the community shocked and heartbroken as they come to terms with the loss of these young lives.
