Appeals court reaffirms Donald Trump’s gag order while he continues to urge judge to recuse from hush money case

Former President Donald Trump continues to be restricted from speaking freely about his hush money criminal case, as a New York appeals court upheld his gag order. Despite arguments that he is unfairly muzzled while his likely Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, is able to make statements about him, the restrictions remain in place. Trump’s lawyers are also seeking for the trial judge, Juan M. Merchan, to recuse himself due to his daughter’s work for Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign, questioning his impartiality.
The gag order was imposed by Merchan in March, initially restricting Trump from commenting on witnesses and jurors but later expanded to include his own family after the former president made false claims about the judge’s daughter. Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on September 18 but his lawyers are hoping to have his conviction thrown out in light of a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.
In the midst of this legal battle, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan has sent a letter demanding any documents related to Harris’ campaign, President Biden’s reelection campaign, and discussions about Trump’s hush money prosecution. Prosecutors have argued that the high court ruling on presidential immunity does not apply to this case, where Trump was convicted of falsifying records to cover up hush money payments to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and plans to appeal his conviction after sentencing.
