Largest Russia-West Prisoner Swap Since Cold War: Who Was Freed? | Politics News

The recent prisoner swap between Russia and the West involved the release of 16 individuals, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. Gershkovich, along with other prominent figures such as former US marine Paul Whelan, Russian opposition politicians, and activists critical of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, were among those freed. The exchange marked the largest such operation since the Cold War.

Among those released were individuals such as Lilia Chanysheva, Ksenia Fadeyeva, and Vladimir Kara-Murza, who had been serving prison sentences for various charges related to their activism and opposition to the Kremlin. Evan Gershkovich, arrested in 2023 on espionage charges, was finally freed after a closed trial where Russia failed to provide evidence to support their claims.

The prisoner swap also saw the release of Alsu Kurmasheva, Kevin Lik, Oleg Orlov, and other individuals who had been imprisoned on various charges, including treason, extremism, and criticizing the government.

The swap also involved the release of individuals from Belarus as well as the United States, Germany, Slovenia, Poland, and Norway. The exchange included individuals accused of spying, spreading false information, and other charges. The release of these individuals has been met with relief and joy from their families and supporters.

The prisoner exchange comes amidst heightened tensions between Russia and the West, particularly in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The release of these individuals is seen as a positive step towards easing tensions and fostering diplomatic relations between the two sides.
