Transgender protections reinstated by Midcoast school district

Regional School Unit 40, which serves Union, Warren, Washington, Waldoboro, and Friendship, has voted 9-6 to reinstate its protections for transgender students. Earlier this year, the school board had voted 8-8 to delete the policy that provides guidance on transgender student rights in the district. The recent vote to rescind the June decision means that the policy will now remain in place.

The policy requires staff to keep the identity of transgender students confidential, allow them to use restrooms according to their gender identities, and use their chosen names and pronouns. Rev. Benjamin Perry, a resident of Union, spoke in favor of reinstating the policy, citing the recent tragic suicide of a transgender child in their congregation.

However, school board member Joshua Blackman from Warren opposed the policy, calling transgender identities against nature and part of an “evil woke agenda.” Despite opposition from Blackman and other board members, the majority voted to bring back the protections for transgender students.

Board chair Danny Jackson defended the decision to rescind the June vote, stating that it was within legal procedure. Board members who supported reinstating the policy emphasized the importance of providing a safe and inclusive environment for all students.

The vote to reinstate the transgender protection policy was met with mixed reactions, with supporters applauding the decision and critics expressing concerns about procedure and ideology. Ultimately, the majority of the board felt that it was necessary to provide basic assurances of dignity and safety for transgender students in the district.
