A police officer from the Catalan regional police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, has been arrested in connection with the investigation into Carles Puigdemont’s escape. Spanish media reports indicate that a car belonging to this officer was used in Puigdemont’s escape, leading to the officer’s arrest. The Mossos d’Esquadra spokesperson confirmed the arrest but did not provide further details.
Following Puigdemont’s escape, the Catalan police have reportedly reactivated their operation to locate him. The regional police are also considering summoning Jordi Turull, the secretary-general of Puigdemont’s Junts party, for his alleged involvement in the escape. Meanwhile, protests have erupted in Barcelona, with estimates of 3,500 participants calling for justice in the situation.
In response to these events, political leaders have voiced their opinions, with Albert Batet criticizing the Catalan Republican Left for their role in electing Salvador Illa as the new regional president. Illa, in turn, has emphasized the importance of addressing concrete issues faced by the Catalan people, such as energy and healthcare, rather than focusing solely on independence.
The situation in Catalonia has raised concerns about the Mossos d’Esquadra, with reports of internal criticism and embarrassment among the force following Puigdemont’s escape. The regional transit authorities have also reported traffic disruptions due to roadblocks set up during the search for Puigdemont. Opposition leaders have criticized the Madrid government for failing to apprehend Puigdemont, calling for the upholding of the law.
