EU says Ukraine has a ‘legitimate right’ to strike targets in Russia

Russia has condemned a Ukrainian incursion in the border oblast of Kursk as a “large-scale provocation,” with European Commission spokesperson Peter Stano stating that Ukraine has the right to defend itself by attacking targets in Russia. The incursion, which began on Tuesday, has seen hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers cross into Russia, resulting in civilian casualties including deaths and injuries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has labeled the attack as a bid to weaken its offensive in Donetsk, while other officials have called it a terrorist act and criticized the West for its “cynical silence.” Despite this, the European Union remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine’s defense, providing political, financial, humanitarian, diplomatic, and military assistance.

The EU and its member states have offered almost €108 billion in support to Ukraine and have imposed 14 rounds of sanctions on Russia to cut off its resources and access to materials necessary for war. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which began in February 2022, shows no signs of easing as both sides continue to engage in military actions. The situation remains tense as both countries navigate escalating tensions and potential further provocations.
