Maine, Birthplace of Frances Perkins, Pushes for National Monument Designation

The Frances Perkins Center, a nonprofit organization, is requesting President Biden to declare Frances Perkins’ family home in Newcastle, Maine, a national monument to be run by the National Park Service. Perkins was a key figure in the New Deal measures during the Great Depression and the first woman to serve in a U.S. president’s Cabinet. Supporters believe the site has a good chance of approval because of Biden’s executive order to honor women’s history. The National Parks Conservation Association is not aware of any other proposals to honor women for a national monument. Perkins’ accomplishments, including Social Security and the 40-hour work week, are seen as impactful on American history and people’s lives today.

The Frances Perkins Homestead was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2014 and is currently run by the Frances Perkins Center. It features an exhibition on Perkins’ life and trails through the property. The center hopes to open part of the 1837 brick house to visitors next year. Perkins’ upbringing on the farm in Newcastle influenced her views on social justice and economic security. The site would become Maine’s second national monument, alongside Katahdin Woods and Waters.

The recognition of Perkins as a key figure in American history and her contributions to labor rights and women’s issues make her family home a significant candidate for a national monument designation. The center aims to ensure that Perkins’ legacy continues to inspire future generations by upholding her beliefs in social justice.
