EU Official Breton Warns Musk of Legal Obligations Before Trump Interview

Tech mogul Elon Musk is set to host US presidential candidate Donald Trump on his X platform in a live-streamed conversation. However, the European Union’s internal market chief, Thierry Breton, has sent a letter to Musk urging him to comply with the EU’s digital regulations regarding the amplification of harmful content, especially during live streams.

Breton expressed concern that failure to mitigate harmful content could have detrimental effects on public security and civic discourse. The conversation between Musk and Trump is scheduled to take place on Trump’s X channel, and Trump recently made a return to the platform following Musk’s acquisition.

Since Musk took over X, tensions have risen between him and the EU, with Musk facing accusations of breaching the EU’s Digital Services Act. Musk previously announced that he was suing the European Commission over transparency issues in the ‘blue check’ verification program.

Breton’s letter shows heightened concern in Brussels over X’s role in spreading content that could incite violence or public disorder. Breton specifically mentioned X’s involvement in recent unrest in the UK, which Musk has been accused of stoking.

The EU Commissioner warned that he and his team would be vigilant for any breaches of the DSA and would not hesitate to take action to protect EU citizens. X has around 300 million users worldwide, with a significant number in the EU, making compliance with EU regulations crucial.
