Russia-Ukraine conflict: Timeline of significant events on day 899 | Latest updates from the Russia-Ukraine war

The war between Russia and Ukraine enters its 899th day with significant developments reported on Monday, August 12, 2024. In Kursk, Russia, 13 people were injured after debris from a destroyed Ukrainian missile hit a residential building, prompting an evacuation of civilians in at-risk areas. Moscow claimed to have thwarted Ukraine’s attempts to breach its territory with armoured vehicles near the border. Russian air defense units destroyed 14 drones and four missiles launched by Ukraine over the Kursk region. A fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, allegedly started by either side, was extinguished without a rise in radiation levels.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces reportedly destroyed 53 out of 57 Russian attack drones across the country. Analysts warned that the next weeks would be critical along the front line in eastern Ukraine, with the situation around Pokrovsk being particularly challenging. In a diplomatic development, Ukraine’s performance in the Paris Olympics, including three athletics medals won on August 4, was seen as a morale boost against Russia’s ongoing invasion. Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who won gold in the women’s high jump, dedicated her medal to the Ukrainian athletes and coaches killed since the conflict began in 2022. With tensions escalating on multiple fronts, the conflict shows no signs of abating as both sides continue to engage in combat and diplomatic maneuvers.
