Hollywood actor Tom Cruise stole the show at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics as he abseiled from the roof of the Stade de France in front of a crowd of 71,500 spectators. Cruise grabbed the Olympic flag, jumped on a motorbike, and skydived into Los Angeles, where the 2028 Olympic Games will be held. The ceremony also featured performances by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, and Dr Dre on a beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach praised the Paris Games as “sport at its best” and commended the city for putting on a spectacular event. The ceremony marked the beginning of the four-year countdown to the LA Games, with the Olympic flag being handed over to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. About 9,000 athletes and 270 performers and artists came together for a celebratory show focused on the unifying power of sport and humanity.
Paris 2024 organizing chief Tony Estanguet thanked the athletes for their participation, calling them “magic” and saying they made the world feel alive. The IOC president also expressed his admiration for the French people, saying they had fallen in love with the Olympic Games. Overall, the Paris Olympics were deemed a success, with participants and spectators alike enjoying the celebration of athleticism and international unity.
