Hallowell City Council Accepts Resignation of Ward 3 Councilor Ryan P. Martin
At a recent meeting, the Hallowell City Council accepted the resignation of Ward 3 Councilor Ryan P. Martin, who cited the difficulty of balancing his family life with his work as the executive director of the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute in Wisconsin. Martin, who has served as a councilor since 2023, submitted his resignation letter last week, with his departure effective on August 9.
In his letter, Martin explained that his new role at the agricultural institute requires more time and frequent travel, making it challenging to fulfill his duties as a councilor. Despite being proud of the work accomplished during his time on the council, including implementing a pesticide ban and supporting essential services like parks and the library, Martin decided it was best for his family and the city for him to step down at this time.
Mayor George LaPointe will appoint a resident to fill Martin’s spot on the council until after the November elections, when the seat will be up for grabs to complete the remaining year on Martin’s term. The nomination period for candidates for the Hallowell City Council is currently open and will close on September 3. Councilors are paid an annual salary of $1,500 and must reside in the ward they serve.
Martin’s Ward 3 seat, which includes the area between Middle Street and Interstate 95, will be up for election again in November 2025 for a full three-year term. The council is now seeking a new representative to fulfill the duties in Ward 3, as Martin steps down to focus on his family and professional responsibilities.
