Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced that he will not seek re-election as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the upcoming party polls, signaling a change in leadership for the country. Kishida stated that it was time for a new face to lead the party and that he would fully support their leadership.
Kishida’s decision comes amid a major corruption scandal within the LDP, which has resulted in more than 80 lawmakers being implicated, including some from a faction previously led by assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. This scandal has led to a sharp decline in Kishida’s approval ratings.
Whoever wins the race for party leader will become Japan’s next prime minister, as the LDP holds the most seats in parliament. Kishida, known for his reputation as a consensus builder, took over from Yoshihide Suga, who was criticized for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During his tenure, Kishida pledged to double Japan’s defense spending to meet the NATO standard of two percent of GDP by 2027, a move aimed at countering China’s assertive stance in the Asia Pacific region. He also focused on strengthening ties with the United States and other countries in the region, signing defense pacts and announcing new eras of cooperation.
Kishida’s decision not to seek re-election has set the stage for a new leader to take over the party and the country, with implications for Japan’s domestic and international policies moving forward.
