Rights Group Demands Closure of ‘Israeli Torture Camps’ in Israel-Palestine Conflict

The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights has reported that 2,650 Palestinians taken from Gaza since October remain in Israeli custody, where they are facing severe physical and psychological torture. The detainees have been subjected to various forms of abuse, including standing naked in the sun, verbal threats, and deprivation of basic needs such as food and water. The rights group compared the level of violence to atrocities documented in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib. Among the detainees are 12 children and two women, with some facing trials while others are classified as “unlawful combatants” without specific charges. Despite reports of several deaths resulting from torture, there is no definitive record of the total number of Palestinian fatalities in Israeli custody. The Al Mezan Center has called for accountability for these abuses, which it believes are part of a broader pattern of abuse consistent with the crime of genocide.
Recent findings by the United Nations and other rights groups have denounced the widespread abuse of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. Reports of sexual abuse, torture, and mistreatment have drawn international condemnation, with Israel’s Channel 12 featuring footage of such abuses. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights detailed the torture and mistreatment faced by Palestinians imprisoned since Hamas-led attacks on Israel last October. Israeli human rights group B’Tselem presented testimonies documenting severe violence, sexual assault, and starvation suffered by Palestinian detainees. At least 60 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since October, with B’Tselem calling for an investigation by the International Criminal Court into those responsible for these crimes.
