United States approves $20 billion in arms sales to Israel amid ongoing violence in Gaza | Updates on the Israel-Palestine conflict

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the United States has approved another $20 billion in weapons transfers to Israel, despite concerns over human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank. The State Department defended the decision, citing the importance of assisting Israel in maintaining a strong defense capability. This comes as Israel braces for anticipated retaliatory strikes from Iran and Hezbollah following the recent assassinations of high-level Hamas and Hezbollah officials.

President Joe Biden has expressed hopes of avoiding further escalation through a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. However, critics have urged the Biden administration to cease weapons transfers to Israel, arguing that the US is enabling the destruction in Gaza and failing to use its leverage to secure a ceasefire. Reports of Israeli forces violating international law and committing abuses like torture have not halted the flow of weapons, despite US laws prohibiting support to military units accused of such violations.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza during a speech at the United Nations. The US aims to “turn the temperature down” in the region but faces challenges in achieving peace as tensions continue to rise. With concerns mounting over the potential for a regional war, the international community is closely watching the situation and urging diplomatic efforts to bring about a resolution to the conflict.
