Bangladesh’s interim prime minister, Muhammad Yunus, has pledged to support the Rohingya community seeking refuge in the country and maintain the important garment industry. With over one million Rohingya currently sheltered in Bangladesh, Yunus emphasized the need for international support for their humanitarian operations and eventual repatriation to Myanmar. He also highlighted the influx of Rohingya with war-related injuries amid escalating conflict in western Rakhine State.
Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist, took office after his predecessor, Sheikh Hasina, fled amidst antigovernment protests. He has vowed to investigate the deaths of hundreds of protesters and ensure free and fair elections in the future. Yunus condemned the previous administration for destroying the country’s institutions and emphasized the need for national reconciliation.
The garment industry, which accounts for 85 percent of Bangladesh’s annual exports, will be a key focus for Yunus, who warned against disruptions in the global clothing supply chain. He also committed to working with UN investigators probing atrocities committed during the student-led protests.
Yunus’s administration aims to prioritize support for the Rohingya community, address human rights issues, and restore democracy and stability in Bangladesh. With a focus on national reconciliation and economic stability, Yunus aims to lead the country through a period of transition and ensure accountability for past injustices.
