Madison, Maine – Madison and Carrabec High Schools had a successful first year in eight-player soccer in Maine, with both schools claiming state titles in 2023. Madison’s girls team won the Gold Ball by defeating Penquis Valley 3-1, while Carrabec’s boys team secured a 1-0 victory over Schenck/Stearns in a tough match.
Both schools are looking to contend this year with many core players returning from their championship runs. However, they will have to adjust to new coaches, with Hunter Durland taking over at Carrabec and Lauren Peters and Mike Walsh leading the Madison team.
Durland, at just 20 years old, is one of the youngest high school soccer coaches in Maine. Despite his age, he is eager to share his knowledge and experience with his team. Carrabec’s strategy of emphasizing possession over long balls helped them secure an undefeated season last year, and they aim to continue that success under Durland’s leadership.
On the girls’ side, Madison’s co-coaches Lauren Peters and Mike Walsh are excited to work with a talented team that includes standout players like Raegan Cowan, who scored an impressive 58 goals last season. They are still adjusting to the rules of short-sided soccer but are impressed with their team’s skills and progress during practice.
Both schools are aiming for continued success this season, and with dedicated coaches and motivated players, they are confident that they can compete at a high level once again. The rivalry between Madison and Carrabec adds an extra layer of excitement to their matchups, as both schools strive for greatness on the soccer field.
