Live coverage of Middle East crisis: IDF launches airstrikes on Lebanon in self-defense while Hezbollah fires hundreds of rockets at Israel

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has launched air strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, citing self-defense in anticipation of an imminent missile and rocket attack from Hezbollah. This has sparked a cycle of escalation between the two parties and raised concerns about the potential for all-out war. The IDF spokesman warned of an extensive Hezbollah response and urged Lebanese civilians to move to safety. Israel has reported minimal damage from Hezbollah’s attacks and has vowed to defend itself against any threats.

Hezbollah has declared an end to its attack for the day, denying that Israeli strikes affected their operation. They launched a barrage of rockets and drones targeting military sites in northern Israel, in retaliation for the killing of their top military commander, Fouad Shukur, a month earlier. Israel responded with airstrikes in Lebanon, resulting in one reported fatality and several injuries.

Israeli officials have indicated that they will respond to developments on the ground but do not seek a full-scale war. Flights to and from Ben Gurion airport were temporarily suspended, and air raid sirens sounded in northern Israel. The Israeli military issued civil defense instructions, limiting gatherings but allowing people to go to work with access to air raid shelters. Despite the ongoing strikes, only one injury has been reported in south Lebanon. The situation remains tense, with the risk of further escalation looming.
