Tragedy struck in south-east Iceland when an ice cave collapsed while a tour group was visiting the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Two people are currently missing, while two others were seriously injured in the incident. The group of 25 people had been on an organised tour with a guide when the cave collapsed, trapping four individuals underneath the ice. Icelandic authorities have launched a search and rescue operation, with two people already being rescued but suffering serious injuries. The search continues for the remaining two individuals trapped in the ice cave.
Local police in Sudurland confirmed the incident and stated that the search efforts were ongoing. Two helicopters from Iceland’s coastguard, as well as ambulances and police, have been deployed to the scene to assist in the rescue operation. The glacier where the accident occurred is situated near the popular tourist destination Jökulsárlón, known for its stunning glacial lagoon. The collapse of the ice cave serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of exploring such natural phenomena, and authorities are urging caution for those visiting similar sites. Our thoughts are with the missing and injured individuals, and we hope for a swift and successful rescue operation.
