Zac Gallen pitched a gem as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-1 for their fifth straight victory. Gallen threw six innings of two-hit ball, striking out nine batters. Eugenio Suárez contributed with a two-run double off the Green Monster. The Diamondbacks have won 23 of their last 29 games, solidifying their hold on the top NL wild-card spot.
Gallen, who was making his first career appearance at Fenway Park, reflected on the historic ballpark and the atmosphere. Boston’s Kutter Crawford struggled, giving up three hits and six walks, allowing Arizona to score two runs in the seventh inning without a hit.
Despite their strong performance the previous night, where they scored 12 runs on 16 hits, the Diamondbacks struggled offensively early in the game. Joc Pederson’s double off the Green Monster and Suárez’s two-run double in the fourth inning gave Arizona an early lead. They added two more runs in the seventh inning without getting a hit, capitalizing on walks and a wild pitch from Boston pitchers.
Manager Torey Lovullo commended his team’s patience and ability to create run-scoring opportunities. The Diamondbacks’ pitching and timely hitting have propelled them to success in recent games, positioning them just four games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
Despite a late offensive effort from the Red Sox in the ninth inning, the Diamondbacks were able to secure the victory with Paul Sewald closing out the game. With their strong performance, Arizona continues to be a team to watch in the MLB postseason race.
