A Benton man, Derek Taylor, was recently sentenced to 22 years in prison after committing domestic violence aggravated assault against his wife. The incident took place in front of their daughter, who witnessed the attack and called 911 for help. Taylor’s criminal history was described by the judge as “abysmal,” with multiple prior convictions for domestic violence assaults and other violent crimes.
Superior Court Justice Julia Lipez handed down the sentence, which also includes a 10-year probation period. The victim of the attack suffered physical injuries and mental trauma, leaving her in fear even after the incident. The prosecutor argued for a 29-year sentence, citing Taylor’s lack of remorse and history of violent behavior.
Despite his attorney’s appeal for a lighter sentence, citing Taylor’s participation in a substance use disorder program while in jail, the judge upheld the 22-year prison term. Taylor, who expressed disbelief at the length of his sentence, is also prohibited from contacting the victim, possessing firearms, drugs, or alcohol, and must participate in domestic violence prevention programs.
The severity of Taylor’s actions and the impact on the victim and her daughter were significant factors in the sentencing decision. The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
