Providing a Ray of Hope for Medical Students in Gaza during the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Ezz ad-Din Lulu, a fifth-year medical student in Gaza City, enjoyed sketching people on the streets before his home was destroyed in an Israeli attack. Seeking refuge at his grandparents’ house, he volunteered at al-Shifa Hospital, which was under siege for 10 days. He received a call informing him that his father, brother, sister-in-law, niece, uncles, and grandmother had been killed. His mother survived and was found in another hospital. Ezz stayed with her, joining al-Ahli Hospital in January to assist in surgeries. In June, he established the Samir Foundation in honor of his father’s dream to support medical students in Gaza.

Despite his personal tragedy, Ezz remained resilient, becoming a first assistant at the hospital. While unable to graduate due to the destruction of his university, he gained valuable experience through his work. The foundation received support from individuals and organizations, providing training and workshops for medical students in the region. Ezz’s story of loss and resilience has inspired others, like 21-year-old Tasnim, a foundation beneficiary.

Reflecting on his journey, Ezz expressed a mix of pride and sadness, longing for his father to witness his achievements. Despite the challenges he faced, Ezz continues to pursue his medical career with determination and a desire to help others in his community. His story serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of the people of Gaza in the face of adversity.
