Last week, two British crew members of the superyacht Bayesian, which sank off Sicily, were placed under investigation by the local prosecutor’s office. Tim Parker Eaton, in charge of the engine room, and Matthew Griffith, the lookout crew member during the sinking, are being investigated. The crew bedrooms have been searched, phones seized, and investigations are ongoing. The captain, James Cutfield, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges. He refused to answer prosecutors’ questions at his third hearing. Fifteen people survived the sinking, but seven were killed, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter. Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said his team would consider all forms of responsibility in the sinking, including the crew and the yacht’s manufacturer. Prosecutors suggested that the sinking may have been caused by a “downburst,” a powerful wind. The investigation is still ongoing, and being under investigation does not imply guilt. This is a developing story, and more information will be released as the investigation progresses.
